In this four-day class, young creatives will practice and learn the basics of drawing.
Day 1: Energy & Movement Gesture Drawing & Line Warmups Today is all about "loosening up" and overcoming the fear of the blank page. Students will dive into the world of gesture drawing, learning how to capture the action and energy of a subject in just a few seconds. Through a series of high-energy line warmups and "blind contour" exercises, we will focus on hand-eye coordination and the beauty of expressive mark-making. It’s all about the process, not perfection!
Day 2: The Blueprint of the Face Portrait Proportions & The Grid Method Have you ever wondered how artists get a portrait to look "just right"? Today, we unlock the secrets of the human face. We will study the standard mathematical proportions of a portrait and introduce the Grid Method—a classic technique used by the masters to achieve pinpoint accuracy. Students will learn how to break down complex images into manageable shapes, building a solid foundation for a realistic self-portrait or character study.
Day 3: Light, Shadow, & Form Still Life & Value Studies On Day 3, we bring objects to life! By setting up a classic still life, students will explore the "Five Elements of Shading." We will move beyond simple outlines to focus on value—the lightness or darkness of a color. Using charcoal or graphite, students will learn how to use highlights, core shadows, and reflected light to make flat shapes look like 3D forms that pop off the paper.
Day 4: The Grand Finale Final Composition & Peer Feedback It’s time to bring all our new skills together. Students will spend the first half of the day working on a final polished composition that incorporates line, proportion, and value. To wrap up our intensive, we will hold a supportive "Gallery Walk." This peer feedback session teaches students how to talk about art constructively, celebrate their classmates' successes, and reflect on their own creative journey.
