Curious kids, welcome to the lab. In this four-day mixed media mashup, young “art scientists” will experiment with paint, collage, sculpture, and more. We’ll test ideas, combine materials, and see what unexpected creations appear.
Day 1: The Great Resist Did you know that oil and water are "enemies"? Today, we use that to our advantage! We’ll start by creating vibrant drawings with oil pastels and then "flood" the paper with watercolor paints. The wax in the pastels will push the paint away, making our drawings glow through the color. We will experiment with salt textures and wet-on-wet techniques to create backgrounds that look like outer space or the deep ocean.
Day 2: Build & Layer Paper Collage & 3D Textures Today we put down the brushes and pick up the scissors! Inspired by artists like Eric Carle and Henri Matisse, we will create our own "painted paper" and tear it into bold shapes. We’ll learn the art of layering—deciding what goes in the front and what stays in the back. Using recycled materials, fabric scraps, and buttons, we’ll turn flat drawings into textured masterpieces you can actually feel.
Day 3: Stamp, Press, & Pattern Printmaking & Stamping Fun It’s all about the "multiples" today! We will explore the world of printmaking by creating our own custom stamps. Using foam, sponges, and even everyday "found objects" (like bubble wrap or bottle caps), students will design intricate patterns and repeating shapes. We’ll learn how to load our stamps with ink or paint to create rhythmic designs that can serve as standalone art or a base for more layering.
Day 4: The Ultimate Mashup The Final "Master-Mix" & Artist Gallery On our final day, all the rules go out the window! Students will choose their favorite techniques from the week—stamping, collage, and resist—to create one large-scale Final Mashup. We will focus on "composition" (where things go) and adding fine details with markers or pens. To celebrate, we’ll host a "Mini-Museum Walk" where our Art Scientists can explain the "top-secret" ingredients they used in their creations.
